Newcastle Jets Vs Melbourne Victory - Round 8 Match Report

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

The Jets have beaten Melbourne Victory 1-0 with a late goal from youngster Marko Jesic. Despite going in as firm favourites, and then losing Archie Thompson to a red card for dissent, Melbourne never really looked like beating Newcastle yesterday evening.

Newcastle have been steadily improving over the past few weeks and it looks like they are starting to build some momentum.

Newcastle Jets Vs Wellington Phoenix - Round 7 Match Report

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Newcastle Jets have drawn 2-2 with Wellington this afternoon in front of 8249 fans at Energy Australia Stadium. Newcastle played well and were unlucky to concede early on from a penalty after Piorkowski appeared to fall into Coveny.

Tarek Elrich scored a screamer from 25 yards out lobbing over Phoenix keeper, Mark Paston. Newcastle looked the more dangerous side, and were rewarded with a goal in the 68th minute when Zura headed the ball on to Kaz Patafta who finished easily.

Wellington were saved in the 89th minute when a tired challenge from Matt Thompson saw Smeltz equalise with class from the spot.

It was an encouraging performance from the Jets considering their long injury list, but they can not afford any more draws if they want to finish in the top 4 this season.

Adelaide United Vs Newcastle Jets Match Report

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Adelaide United have beaten Newcastle Jets 2-0, with late goals from Cristiano. Both teams created early opportunities and the game looked like it was setting up to be a real battle. However, midway into the first half Adam Griffiths had to come off after picking up an injury, and 6 minutes later was followed by his brother, Joel Griffiths also with injury concerns. This was further worsened when Jesper Hakansson and Jason Hoffman came off at half time taking the Newcastle Jets down to 10 men.

The Jets had a few good chances to score but Galekovic was in fine form making two amazing saves. Newcastle continued to hold on and looked like they would at least salvage a point, however this was not to be. Adelaide’s persistence in front of goal eventually paid off, and Ante Covic’s clearance error gave them their second.

It was a hard game to watch for Jets fans but a fair result. It will be interesting to see what selections van Egmond makes next week given that a few star Jets may be missing.

Queensland Roar Vs Newcastle Jets Match Review: Griffiths to the Rescue!

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Newcastle Jets have recorded their first win of the season, beating Queensland Roar 1-0, thanks to a late opportunistic goal by Joel Griffiths. Joel reportedly had stepped up at training this week, taking a leadership role with the attacking players. So, it was fitting that his commitment and motivation resulted in his first goal in three weeks and Newcastle’s first win.

Queensland Roar outplayed the Jets for most of the game, and Charlie Miller was unlucky to put Queensland ahead and break their long standing curse, but Newcastle stuck in and were able to salvage the points due to a mistake by Liam Reddy on a corner.

It looks like Newcastle’s luck is beginning to change!

Newcastle Jets Vs Sydney FC - Round 4 Report, 13 September 2008

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

The game started fairly heated with Mark Bridge and Stuart Musialik being given a rough welcome back to Energy Australia Stadium. John Aloisi made his debut for Sydney but a part from one opportunity on goals was fairly quiet.

The Jets applied some good pressure on Sydney FC in the second half with both Edmundo Zura and Adam Griffiths creating chances but unfortunately could not capitalise on Sydney’s mistakes.

Ante Covic seemed steady in goals which is unfortunate for Ben Kennedy who was hoping to get his first start this week. Newcastle’s new signing, Daniel Piorkowski played his debut and with time should become a solid fixture in the Newcastle backline.

The match ended as a 0-0 draw. Overall a decent performance from the Jets boys who obviously were a lot more focused this week. Unfortnately however, they didn’t do enough to get the three points and still remain winless after four games.
